Hinahaplos niya ang kanyang tiyan.  Hindi mo gaanong pansin at maipaliwanag ang kanyang ngiti.  Isanng malalim na kasiyahan.  “Ang aking anak.”  Bigkas niya sa sarili.

Ito ang simula…

Mahirap tandaan kung kelan mo unang nasilayan ang sikat ng araw.  Iniisip mong ikaw ay kalong-kalong ng iyong ina sa mga oras na iyon.  Siya ang iyong duyan.  Ang iyong tagapaglingkod.  Hindi niya hahayaang madapuan ka ng lamok at langaw.

Ang buong panahong iyo’y ikaw ang sentro ng pamilya.  Ang nagmimistulang laruan at pampawala ng bigat ng kalooban.  Ngayo’y mabilis ang paglipas ng oras.  Mayuming hinihipa’t tinatangay ng hangin ang pagtakbo ng oras.  Hindi mo mapigilan ang pag-ikot ng hintuturo ng orasan, gustuhin mo man.  Sa paglipas ng buwan tanging ikaw pa rin ang naghahatid ng kakaibang saya.  Tagumpay sa una mong pagngiti.  Ang iyong unang paghakbang.  Panahon ng iyong kakaiyak dahil sa pagtubo ng un among ngipin.  “Mama! Papa!”.  Ang una mong mga kataga.

“Bakit?”  Ngayo’y tumitila na ang pagtagas ng iyong luha.  Nagyo’y pasulpot-sulpot na pagtangis.

Tuyo na ang mga luha.  Mulat na mulat na ang mga mata sa gitna parin ng kadiliman.  Ngayo’y medyo maingay na sa labas ngunit animo’y bingi ka pa rin sa katahimikan.

Masdan mo ang kapati mo?”  Umiiyak siya’t hindi maipaliwanag ang mukha sa sakit na nararamdaman.  “Bagong taon ngayon mga anak.” Ang kapatid mo nama’y hinahaplos ang kanyang mukha at umiiyak.  At dali-dali kang lumabas ng bahay.  Mabigat ang pakiramdam.  Nanginginig ang mga kamay. Wari’y nagsisisi.  Pero di mo na maibabalik ang nangyari.

“Mama…” nagyo’y marahang tumutulo ang luha.

Natagpuan mo nalang ang iyong sarili pauwi sa inyong bahay.  Kakaiba ngayon ang himig at ihip ng hangin.  Sa pagdaan mo sa kalye papunta sa inyo.  Ang pakiramdam.  Mabigat.  Ngayo’y nabibigyan mo ng kwento ang bawat pagbagsak ng dahon ng bawat punong dinadaanan mo.  Natatanaw mo na ang paliko sa dulo ng kalye.  Doo’y matatanaw mo ang inyong bahay.

Umiiyak ka ngayon ng may pagsisisi.  Humahagulgol.  Mabilis ang pagpapalit-palit ng mga larawan.

Ngayo’y bumililis ang pagtibok ng iyong puso. Pawang gusto mo ng huminto ngunit ayaw maawat ng iyong mga paa.  Nanlalamig ka na at namumutla.
